Movies thought post 1 - Movies I've been watching

Hey everyone! Sorry for not posting recently. I will be posting a list of shows I'm watching, movies I want to watch and books I've been reading and thoughts on them too!

Anyhow, these past few days I've been watching a lot of old-ish movies I haven't seen before. Here goes!

Mulan (1998)
I kid you not, I never watched this movie before. Deprived childhood? Oh yes, haha. I watched half thanks to a history lesson but never finished it and never could be bothered /shot And I can't believe what I missed out on! Absolutely adored watching it. I was completely engaged, delighted by the themes and so on and so forth. So I eagerly went to watch the second one! Well, more on that later.

Mulan is incredibly inspirational for younger viewers as it proves that you don't have to be dainty and pretty to achieve your goals, and get the man of your dreams xD And I'm glad that wasn't a main plot, as it would detract from the value of the film's message.

Mulan 2 (2004)
And so Mulan 2 had a lot to live up to, and decided to go with what they thought would be more popular. Interesting themes in this movie, and yet it falls flat compared to the first. Why? I was thinking of this before realising that the ideas shown in this film were so much more superficial than the first one. The plot also centred more on Mulan and Shang's relationship than the issue of arranged marriage, which wasn't a strong theme to begin with anyway.

Spirited Away
I know, I know. Don't look at me like that. I get it - everyone's seen it and I haven't. /sobbu Well, till now!

'Spirited Away' is an incredible movie and I'm not surprised - after all it's Studio Ghibli we're talking about! Anyhow, superb and original and also quite touching, this movie swept me off my... seat. Haha.

I actually remember when it first came out and I wanted to see it. I was like, 5 or something? Anyhow my mum was like "NO. IT LOOKS SCARY." So I never did... /sighs I adore Chihiro x Haku by the way :D

For me, the most emotional part was when Chihiro had matured so much and had done so much for her parents, and yet they couldn't remember a thing. For me, that was quite sad. Also when Haku told her to 'never look back' as she walked off... I hope they are reunited... /sobbu

Lolita (1962)

Ah Lolita... the book/movie that people seemed to have idolise, for me, was not that great. Yes, you have to marvel at the disturbing beauty of Humbert's attraction for Dolores, and the true question of who is the tragic one? Dolores, who had her youth stripped from her by older men who should know better, or Humbert, who threw away everything to be with a manipulative young lady?

And it is disturbing when some people idolise Lolita to the point of not seeing it for what it really is - a tragic tale of two disturbed people in an equally disturbing and destructive relationship.

But I digress. Truly, I do not know whether to be saddened by it or disturbed. Probably both, at the same time. Still, it was interesting. If you think about it, Dolores and Humbert were portrayed as both victims and manipulators.

I just don't know, people, I just don't know what to make of this movie. I hate all of the character yet I pity the two mains.

EDIT: Also methinks Dolores Haze has the Electra Complex.

So that's it! You probably have seen all these movies, but oh well. What did you think of them?

Till next time!
